About Atelier Mateus
Founded in 2021 in Lisbon's Príncipe Real by designer and maker Tiago Mateus, Atelier Mateus began as a small workshop devoted to solid wood and traditional joinery.
With an unwavering commitment to solid wood and traditional joinery, the atelier has grown from a single workshop into three spaces in the heart of the city and a team of eight craftspeople carrying the work forward. Working at the intersection of traditional joinery and contemporary design, the atelier produces both collection pieces and bespoke commissions for private clients, architects and interior designers.

Behind old doors
This atelier is where fine joinery happens.
Once cutting and milling are done, the pieces come here to take their final shape. Under Teresa, our production manager, and her team of seven woodworkers.
The room sits behind centenarian wooden doors, nearly three and a half metres high, that once opened onto the stables of the Marquês de Pombal, the 18th-century statesman behind Lisbon's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake.
We've worked out of this space for two years and every afternoon the room fills with a warm, golden light.
Fine furniture is made slowly, by hand,
in a city that still allows it.
